Does It Really Work?

HIFU is a non-invasive treatment designed to lift and tighten the skin by stimulating collagen production deep beneath the surface. Learn how HIFU works, what results you can expect, and whether this non-surgical facelift option may be right for you.

As we age, skin laxity becomes a common concern, leading many to seek non-surgical alternatives for skin tightening and lifting. One such advanced technology is High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU), a revolutionary treatment that stimulates collagen production and tightens skin without the need for surgery. But does it really work?

What is HIFU Facial Treatments?

HIFU is a non-invasive procedure that delivers focused ultrasound energy deep into the skin layers, specifically targeting the Superficial Musculo-Aponeurotic System (SMAS)—the same layer tightened during a surgical facelift. This energy triggers collagen synthesis, which in turn leads to firmer, tighter skin over time.

How Does HIFU Work for Face Lifting?

HIFU works through a multi-step process that activates the body’s natural regenerative mechanisms:

  1. Precision Ultrasound Energy Penetration
  • HIFU uses high-frequency ultrasound waves to reach three different depths within the skin: 1.5mm (superficial dermis), 3mm (deep dermis), and 4.5mm (SMAS layer).
  • Unlike traditional skin treatments, HIFU penetrates deeper into the SMAS layer, which is the foundational layer surgeons tighten during a facelift.

  1. Thermal Micro-Injury & Collagen Stimulation
  • The focused ultrasound generates thermal energy at precise locations, causing controlled micro-injuries without damaging the skin’s surface.
  • These micro-injuries trigger the body’s healing response, increasing collagen and elastin production in the targeted areas.
  1. Gradual Skin Tightening & Lifting
  • Over the next 2 to 3 months, the newly produced collagen fibres strengthen and reorganize, resulting in visible skin tightening and improved elasticity.
  • This gradual process ensures natural-looking, long-lasting results.
  1. Long-Lasting Effects
  • The collagen regeneration process continues for up to 6 months post-treatment, with results lasting 12-18 months.
  • For optimal results, annual maintenance treatments are recommended to sustain skin firmness.

Scientific Studies Supporting HIFU

  • A 2015 study published in the Journal of Cosmetic and Laser Therapy found that HIFU significantly improved skin elasticity and lifted sagging skin in 93% of participants after 90 days.
  • A 2020 study in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal concluded that HIFU treatment led to measurable collagen fibre thickening and improved skin density within 6 months post-treatment.
  • Research published in Dermatologic Surgery (2016) noted that HIFU is particularly effective in tightening the lower face and jawline, with an 80% patient satisfaction rate.

The Result That You Can Expect from HIFU Treatment

  • Immediately After Treatment: Patients often experience a mild tightening effect due to immediate collagen contraction.
  • 1-3 Months Post-Treatment: Progressive firming and lifting as collagen production increases.
  • 6 Months & Beyond: Full results become visible, with further tightening and improved skin quality.

Patient Satisfaction: Studies report that over 90% of patients notice visible improvements within 6 months, with long-lasting effects for up.

Final Verdict

YES! HIFU is an excellent option for patients looking to achieve non-surgical skin lifting and tightening.

While it does not offer the same level of correction as a surgical facelift, it provides a significant improvement in skin firmness, definition, and overall rejuvenation—all without incisions, downtime, or major risks.

For patients with mild to moderate skin laxity, HIFU is a highly effective solution, backed by both clinical research and real-world patient outcomes. However, individual results can vary based on age, skin condition, and the body’s response to collagen stimulation. For optimal results, combine HIFU with complementary skin treatments such as microneedling, or bio-stimulating injectables to further enhance collagen production and longevity.

 Who is Suitable for HIFU?

Suitable candidates are people aged 30 years and above and who have seen that the skin on their neck or face has become laxer and want to lift plus tighten the relevant areas.

For patients in their thirties, it’s used to stimulate the production of collagen, thus help in delaying the ageing process. Most of the times, patients in their forties and fifties are known to be the most common age groups who usually have this treatment.

The treatment is also for people aged 60 and above provided the laxity degree isn’t too great. Additionally, it is suitable for people who have had surgery previously to extend surgical facelifts effects.

Does it hurt?

A slight prickly discomfort may be experienced during the treatment but that can be reduced with topical numbing cream

HIFU – Pre Treatment & CONTRAINDICATIONS

  • Avoid a heavy meal and fatty foods 1 hour before treatment
  • Avoid caffeine 2 hours before treatment
  • Avoid any alcohol 24 hours before treatment
  • Avoid having any laser treatments on the area 2-3 weeks before treatment
  • Avoid excessive sun exposure (sun burn) on the area 3 weeks before treatment
  • If the skin is red, irritated or broken, we cannot treat until the skin has completely healed
  • Our treatments are not suitable for those who are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Please advise of any blood thinning or skin thinning medications you are taking
  • If you have any metal implants in the area being treated, unfortunately we cannot treat with HIFU. This is because the metal attracts the HIFU energy and the area can become quite hot and painful
  • Pacemaker or have Epilepsy
  • Silicone injections in the treatment area
  • Exposure to the sun burns the skin and sunburned or recently tanned skin cannot be treated with HIFU. Chemicals/products which irritate the skin should be avoided as this may prevent treatment.
  • Certain medications like antibiotics may make your skin become more light-sensitive, if you are on antibiotics, please book two weeks after completion of medication.

** AS WITH MANY TREATMENTS, SEVERE LAXITY WITHIN THE SKIN MAY REQUIRE TWO HIFU SKIN TIGHTENING WITHIN A FEW MONTHS TIME FOR OPTIMAL RESULTS**
